How Social Class Affects Diet, Health and Leisure?
The paragraph for one of my assignments was:"Social class background determines the opportunities an individual has to value and experience health. This is reflected in their dietary and leisure activities, the resources they commit to health care and illness prevention programmes, and the frequency with which they consult experts about health related matters"
But i really don t understand what i m supposed to do..

Answer :
I suggest you respond as if the last word after the closing " is "Discuss."
You can illustrate some truth in this by for example getting data that show most vegetarians and most buyers of organic food are middle class, whereas a higher proportion of both upper class and working class people eat meat and don t buy organic.
Likewise you might find some data either to support or to oppose the statemnent, for example find out how often each class group goes for well-woman clinics, gets various cancer screenings, or follows a diet that is marketed as for health benefits.
Leisure activities - class and the use of gyms, health farms and spas, and on the other hand consumption of poisons such as alcohol, cigarettes and illegal drugs.
I notice too the phrase "determines the opportunites". If I were answering this, I would pick that apart. Class is ONE factor INFLUENCING the CHOICES people make. But it does not DETERMINE the opportunities. If even one person from a particualr class makes the choices usually made only by a different class, it is proof that class does not determine, only influence.
For example, there is nothing to stop a poor person being vegetarian - I knew one or two among the homeless when I was serving at a feed-the-homeless place. It s cheaper than eating meat. On the other hand, being middle-class is no assurance of wisdom on diet. SOME "illness-prevention programmes" such as some supplements you buy in "health shops" are expensive, but others are not. Almost anyone can grow alfalfa seeds. And more working-class people than middle-class till allotments to grow their own fruit and/or veg. Sunshine is available to all, and most people have legs with which to take a brisk walk in the fresh air. So I would answer by challenging the assumption hidden in the question that more spent on experts and officially designated illness prevention and fancy diets = better health. A low-cost game of football or cricket in the park may be more health giving than the same time spent at Fitness First.
If it s still true that working-class people on average die significantly younger than those from the higher classes, I suggest it may be due mainly to smoking, drinking, and pollution, insufficient time in the sun, too much beef and pigmeat, and greater risk of industrial accidents and not to the fact that middle class people spend more on treadmills and health food shop gimmicks. Check it out if you can. Enjoy.

Question :
I am a true conservative.. I believe in a small government on economic and social matters. health care has nothing to do with the economy imo. EVERY AMERICAN should be entitled to health care. Money should Not determine life or death. Anyways..
why is the right wing crying about cuts to medicaid? . Medicare is a failed system anyways.. we should abolish that asap.
I think the republicans are just crying about this issue because BECK, Rush and Sean have been talking about it and these rednecks have been following them like blind donkeys. I love it when sean hannity says.. Heath care via tax breaks and cap and trade.. LOL.. there is NO tax break in the world that would make someone earning 30k a year afford the current heath care premiums..(i make like 80k a year ).
please explain to me how the hell cuts to medicaid is a bad thing; and please explain to me what kind of tax breaks you want to give so people can afford the redicliously inflated heath care premiums.
One more thing.. how much longer till the right wing morons realize that the insurance companies are their enemies rather than friends? the insurance company only cares about one thing.. Money.. they couldn t give a rats *** about your health.
if you havnt figured out.. I hate insurance companies. Yes i have health care but i think its a ******* ripoff. if It were up to be insurance companies would be banned nationwide
So the healthcare bill (senate version) is going to make cuts medicaid.. why is the right crying about this?
Is it because they want to come with any excuse possible to defend the insurance companies?I am a true conservative.. I believe in a small government on economic and social matters. health care has nothing to do with the economy imo. EVERY AMERICAN should be entitled to health care. Money should Not determine life or death. Anyways..

As you correctly say, they want to defend the (un)insurance companies. Politicians from all sides are taking thirty pieces of silver to allow those companies to run death panels. But apparently that is right and working to make the health of Americans better is wrong.
I am always amazed how many Americans seem not to be aware about the real healthcare issues relying instead on FOX and other sources to spread lies about the healthcare system of the USA and those abroad. I mean, if healthcare in nations with universal coverage is so bad, why do they keep it?
Obama wants to make insurance more available to all and change the system so that it gives the American people value for money 1. He also wants change so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Taiwan where private companies are involved in providing healthcare 2.
Obama campaigned on reforming the healthcare system. He said he wanted to make insurance more available and he was elected by the American people to do this 3.
FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids both for kids aged under one and those under five than western European countries with universal health coverage 4.
FACT American insurance companies push up prices and work to stop paying out claims on those they cover 5.
FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet 6.
That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in any western nation with universal health coverage.
If you do not like the policies that Obama was elected to bring in, he can always be voted out of office in 2012. But if you disagree with the facts, please let me know. I am always willing to learn, but please provide proof. None of those who disagree with me have been able to do that so far.
