Breast cancer treatment can be re-understood through an ornate and feminine dressing table stool; a chair both sensual and clinical. Celebrating the vulnerable beauty and sexuality of the breast cancer patient, an unusual, inside-out bra hangs from an adjacent IV stand. The photographic image decorating this intimate apparel reveals the anatomical structure of the lobes and ducts of the breast.

The upholstered fabric pattern on the chair is a botanical print with a difference. Cancer cells inhabit the amorphous pink shapes, and are connected by a trail of human chromosome 17, where the BRCA1 gene (the inheritable breast cancer gene) is located. Small molecules represent the chemotherapy drug Taxol that is derived from the pacific yew tree and other plant compounds. In the center of this network is a large Taxol molecule with pacific yew berries attached (rather than atoms). The flower "bouquet" is composed of pacific yew branches and flax flowers. The lignans in flax are being studied as a breast cancer preventative.

Swirling across a wallpaper print pattern, art historical images of objectified and idealized female bodies are juxtaposed with contemporary illustrations from breast self-examination guides. Elaborate scrollwork is composed of the stickers radiology technicians use to mark the location of scars and nipples during mammography screenings.

A luscious blend of estrogen molecules, mastectomy and lumpectomy altered breasts, Fosteronia refracta (a plant scientists are exploring as a source of a powerful new cancer medication), blank breasts bearing targets (a reference to radiation therapy) and background cancer cells fill the fabric of the privacy screen. Behind the screen is the less addressed side of the story: a slide show of well-known, accomplished women who did not survive breast cancer.

Our culture often blames or marginalizes terminal patients for not fighting hard enough. Negative outcomes, however, have much more to do with medical factors. Despite increases in survival rates for women with early-stage, less aggressive breast cancers, there has been little improvement in the mortality rates for more severe forms of the disease. In the words of feminist writer Barbara Ehrenrich: I didnt battle the disease more bravelyIm lucky.
