Bipolar Disorder Symptoms plus Schizophrenia Symptoms equals Schizoaffective Disorder.
There is a lot of confusion surrounding Schizoaffective disorder. This is probably because schizophrenia itself is so hard to understand when you only have knowledge of bipolar disorder.
What is the difference between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia?
There is a big difference between bipolar and schizophrenia. Bipolar is a mood disorder where a person has trouble regulating their emotions. It's episode, which means it can come and go- some people have chronic symptoms as I do- others can literally go for years without an episode. For example, my former partner Ivan who has bipolar I (one) went 12 years between manic episodes. Stress is often a factor in when a person has episodes. Bipolar disorder can definitely have psychosis- but it is not usually chronic. And most importantly, psychosis with bipolar almost always comes with other mood swings such as psychotic depression or psychotic mania.
Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder which means its main symptom is psychosis. People with schizophrenia can be chronically psychotic or experience episodes, but the psychosis is persistent if a person doesn't get medication treatment.
Both illness are difficult to treat- but schizophrenia is more difficult as there is not enough information on how it affects the brain- which means the medications are more limited. Bipolar treatment focuses on mood stabilizer medications where the focus for schizophrenia is antipsychotics.

What is the difference between Schizophrenia and SchizoAffective Disorder?
I have been diagnosed with Asperger s Syndrome, Schizophrenia, and Schizoaffective disorder? According to my neuropsychological evaluation, they only found Asperger s disorder and Schizoaffective disorder? Does that mean I was given a false diagnosis of Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia shows two personalities. Schizoaffective disorder does not. How many personalities does schizoaffective disorder show?Let s get a few facts straight here before everyone goes off even more confused than before.
Schizophrenia is not about more than 1 personality at all. Never has been either. That would be what was called MPD multiple personality disorder that has been renamed DID dissociative identity disorder. People with DID can have dozens of personalities.
The schizophrenia diagnosis has many different sub-types the most well known and common being paranoid. Thus you must have had symptoms of this to be diagnosed at first.
It s not always easy to make a hard diagnosis at first. If they then see evidence of a mood disorder they may rethink the diagnosis. If you had depression and separate schizophrenia that would be fine but then some showing these symptoms take a manic episode or even a hypomanic one indicating bipolar symptoms. Schizoaffective is where someone has a mood disorder as well as the schizophrenic symptoms. It s not always easy to spot the difference. That is why they tend to treat symptoms rather than diagnosis.
I can t understand why any psychiatrist would say you had schizophrenia or schizoaffective without explaining it to you at the time of telling you this.
It s not an easy thing to live with so good luck in finding the right medications to treat this.

Is schizoaffective disorder a disability under the social security list of impairments?
I have schizoaffective disorder, paranoia, ocd, and im at the hearing level is there anyone out there that was at this level with schizoaffective disorder and got their ssi/ssdi. What did you say or do at the hearing level in front of the administration law judge, and did you get approve or denied. Im am nerous to be in front of the judge, and will he/she ask me any questions. When I got in the hearing, it was a small meeting room. At first my attorney asked me some basic questions like my name, address, etc. After a short time, the judge interviewed me and I was very upset by that time. He asked me if I was able to drive an automobile and I said no, I was too afraid to drive. He asked me if I heard voices and I said yes, voices speak to me in times of trouble. They told me to "get out now" so I packed a bag and left my apartment behind. I testified that I saw red snakes floating around me trying to take over my soul.
The judge asked me where I lived for the last 3 years since I was disabled and unable to work. I explained that I lived 3 years in homeless shelters waiting for my SSDI to get approved.
I started sobbing at the table surrounded by about 5 people also sitting at the large table. The judge jumped up and said "That s it. I ve heard enough." and left the courtroom.
I knew right away I was approved after 3 long years and 3 denials. My attorney explained to me that the judges actions meant that I would be approved and I was. I got $50,000 backpay from the date I first applied.
You definitely need an attorney to win. You don t pay him up front. He takes a percentage of your backpay only if you win. Good Luck to you!
