Nutri-Med Logic Corp: The conclusion of a Meta-Analysis, published in the October issue of Nutrition Reviews, which included all clinical trials in Medline up to April 2010, under the relevant Medical Subject Headings, resulted in the review of 220 studies. From these 220 studies, 52 were selected as qualified and divided to three groups: Low Calorie Diet, Modification of Diet and Diet plus Exercise.

The reports found a statistically significant association between an anti-inflammatory diet, enriched in Omega-3, and improved uptake (acceptance) of glucose (sugar) by the cells, more specifically by stimulating certain cellular receptors (insulin receptors); thus lowering the concentration of the blood sugar.

Insulin Sensitivity denotes lower requirement for insulin in instructing the cells to accept the circulating sugar in the body. Insulin is a key that opens the cellular door to permit the entry of glucose (sugar) into the cells. While there are cells that do not require insulin but muscle cells, in particular, are dependent on insulin.

On the opposite side of the insulin sensitivity sits Insulin resistance, which mainly arises from two imbalances (Redox & Inflammation).

The resistance of muscle cells to accept sugar causes elevated levels of sugar in the blood and forces the uptake of sugar through a different pathway (Aldose-Sorbitol) by a group of cells that are independent of insulin, which in the long-run damages nerves, eyes, blood vessels and kidney.

Improving the sensitivity of cells to insulin, in a way, is synonymous with reducing insulin resistance. While increasing insulin sensitivity does not eliminate the cause of insulin resistance but it does reduce its symptoms.

Insulin Resistance is mainly generated through Resistin, a hormone produced by fat tissues (fat cells). Excessive fat causes a larger than normal production of Resistin, a signal to reduce the intake of carbohydrates. (1). Excess glucose (end-result of carbohydrates) is stored as fat.

Fat cells also produce a hormone called Adiponectin, which is a signal to accept and store excess glucose. While there are many other adipokines (hormones produced by fat tissues) that impact the balance between Adiponectin and Resistin, but at the end it is one of these two hormones, having opposite effect on insulin receptors, that exert a great influence in accepting or rejecting glucose (sugar).

While in the past only in animal studies the adiponectin was increased 2.7 fold through an anti-inflammatory diet, enriched in Omega-3 (2), but this Meta analysis, now, confirms that association between Omega-3 and Adiponectin (increased insulin sensitivity) also exists in humans.

The result of the Meta Analysis was that an Omega-3 diet increases the Adiponectin (sensitivity to insuli) between 14-60%.

Additionally, other studies have shown that Omega-3 through its two most important components, EPA and DHA producing Resolvin E1 and Protectin D1, causes a reduction in insulin resistance. (3)
